Citizens of Switzerland headed to the polls on September 23, 2012 to vote on a triple referendum. Its provisions included: 1) a universal ban on smoking in enclosed spaces; 2) ‘youth and music,’ an initiative for more musical instruction in schools; and 3) secure housing in old age.
An absolute majority of voters must vote "yes" in order for a referendum to pass in Switzerland.
The provision to ban smoking in enclosed spaces was met by a resounding ‘No’ by 66 percent of voters. Similarly, 52.60 people voted against secure housing in old age—a provision that would have allowed pensioner households to waive their right to a tax deduction for debt interest. ‘Youth and music’ passed with 72.70 of valid votes in its favor.
