Puerto Ricans Vote in Referendum

Aug. 20, 2012, midnight

Over 800,000 Puerto Rican citizens voted Sunday in a referendum on two constitutional amendments, both of which were rejected. Fifty-four percent of voters voted against the amendment to reduce the number of seats in the Senate from 27 to 17 and the number of seats in the House from 51 to 39. Fifty-five percent of voters voted against an amendment that would have allowed judges the right to deny bail to those accused of premeditated murder, killing a police officer, and killing someone in a public space.
