Libyans Vote in First Election Since Overthrow of Qaddafi

July 7, 2012, midnight

Voters in Libya on Saturday went to polls to elect the 200-member General National Congress (GNC).This was the first election since last year's revolution that overthrew the government of Muammar QADDAFI. Initial partial results indicate that an alliance led by Mahmoud JIBRIL, considered to be the most liberal of the main political organizations, captured the most party list seats (80 out 200). The majority of seats (120 out of 200), however, are open to only independent candidates, making it difficult to determine the allegiances of the winners.
