Danilo MEDINA of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party won a first-round victory in the Dominican Republic’s presidential elections on Sunday. MEDINA captured 51 percent of the vote, while his opponent, former President Hipolito MEJIA of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, won approximately 47 percent. MEJIA conceded the race on Tuesday but alleged fraud and vote-buying. Four other minor candidates ran, but none received more than one percent of the vote. President Leonel FERNANDEZ of the Dominican Liberation Party was barred from running for a third term.
