José Maria VASCONCELOS, better known as Taur Matan RUAK, won Timor-Leste’s presidential run-off election on Monday. RUAK, a former independence fighter, captured approximately 61 percent of the vote. He defeated former national parliament president Francisco GUTERRES, who won approximately 38 percent. This was the second round of presidential elections. Voters ousted incumbent President Jose RAMOS-HORTA in the first round on March 17.
