Greece Prime Minister Lucas PAPADEMOS on Wednesday called snap general election for May 6. PAPADEMOS has been serving as a caretaker prime minister, running an interim coalition government, since November. The coalition is made up of Greece’s two largest parties, the conservative New Democracy and the Socialist party, PASOK.The two largest parties are polling at historic lows and as many as nine parties may clear the three percent threshold needed to enter parliament. Greece’s electoral system rewards an additional 50 seats to a party or coalition that secures at least 39% of the vote. However, the two largest parties combined are not even reaching this level of support. The elections will be Greece’s first since its economic crisis began in 2009.
