Opposition leader AUNG SAN SUU KYI’S National League for Democracy (NLD) won 43 seats in Myanmar's parliamentary by-elections on Sunday. The elections were held to fill 45 vacant seats in both chambers of the legislature, the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) still holds more than 80% of seats in the legislature. The military retains the power to appoint 110 out of 440 MPs in the lower house and 56 out of 224 in the upper house. The next legislative elections are scheduled for 2015.
