Sauli NIINISTOE of the National Coalition Party won the first round of Finland’s presidential election on Sunday. NIINISTO, a former finance minister, captured 37 percent of the vote while Pekka HAAVISTO, of the Greens party, came in second with 18.8 percent. The two will face each other in the runoff election on February 5. HAAVISTO earned a spot in the runoff by narrowly defeating Paavo VAYRYNEN, who won 17.5 percent of the vote.
