President Nursultan NAZARBAYEV of Kazakhstan dissolved the lower house of parliament on Wednesday and called for snap parliamentary elections on January 15. This will be the first election since a 2009 law, which requires at least two parties enter parliament. Currently, NAZARBAYEV’s Nur Otan Party holds all seats in parliament. Under the new law, however, the second-place party is guaranteed to enter parliament even if it does not reach the seven percent threshold.
