Riots mar Zambian election

Sept. 20, 2011, midnight

Riots erupted in Zambia on Thursday over the slow pace of counting returns from this week’s general election. On Tuesday, voters cast ballots for president in a race between President Rupiah BANDA and Michael SATA. The election is a rematch of the 2008 presidential poll. In that race, BANDA narrowly defeated SATA by a margin of 40 to 38 percent.
