Enoch CHIHANA, a Malawian pro-democracy candidate, defeated the ruling party candidate on Wednesday in a special by-election. CHIHANA finished with 6,641 votes, while Norman NYIRENDA, of President Bingu wa MUTHARIKA's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) garnered 3,275. The results are the latest sign of increased opposition to MUTHARIKA’s regime. MUTHARIKA was forced to fire his cabinet several weeks ago after protests against his rule left 20 people dead. The constituency became vacant after the death of its DPP MP last year.
