Liberians vote in referendum

Aug. 23, 2011, midnight

Liberians headed to the polls on Tuesday to vote in a referendum to approve or reject amending four articles of their constitution. Among the proposed changes were provisions that would reduce the residency requirement for presidential candidates from 10 to 5 years and move House and Senate elections to a plurality, one-round system. Each of the four amendments will be voted on separately and must be ratified by two-thirds of voters.
