Cape Verde opposition candidate Jorge Carlos FONSECA won a presidential runoff election on Sunday, defeating Manuel Inocencio SOUSA, from the ruling African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV). Preliminary results show that FONSECA captured 54.45 percent of the vote while SOUSA, whose party has controlled the presidency for the past ten years, captured 45.91 percent. The election will result in a divided government as the PAICV still controls parliament with 37 of 72 seats.
