Spanish Prime Minister calls snap elections

July 29, 2011, midnight

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez ZAPATERO on Friday called snap parliamentary elections for November 20. ZAPATERO has faced pressure from the opposition Popular Party to call early elections after his Socialist Party’s poor performance in May’s local elections. Polls were not scheduled until March 2012. ZAPATERO already announced that he will not lead the Socialist Party in the next election. Instead, the party chose then interior minister, Alfredo Perez RUBALCABA.
