Latvia opens polling stations for special referendum

July 13, 2011, midnight

Polling stations in Latvia opened on Wednesday for the country’s referendum on the dismissal of the parliament. If more than 50 percent of voters approve the referendum, parliament will be dissolved and the country will hold snap elections. Then-President Valdis ZATLERS called the special referendum in June after parliament blocked an anti-corruption investigation against a prominent politician. Polling stations, including 78 outside of Latvia, will be open for four hours a day from July 13 to July 22.
