Thailand Elections

July 3, 2011, midnight

Yingluck SHINAWATRA is set to become the first female prime minister of Thailand after defeating incumbent Prime Minister Abhisit VEJJAJIVA on Sunday. Preliminary results show that SHINAWATRA’s party, Pheu Thai, captured 265 out of 500 seats, while VEIJJAJIVA’s Democrat Party only won 159 seats. Yingluck is the sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin SHINAWATRA, who was ousted in 2006 by a military coup. The Election Commission will endorse the results seven days after the elections took place. The newly-elected MPs will then have 30 days within which to elect the new prime minister.
