Sudan postpones referendum on Darfur

June 26, 2011, midnight

Sudan’s government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) agreed on Sunday to postpone a referendum on Darfur’s administrative structure. The referendum, which will determine the administrative structure of the western region of Darfur, will now take place one year after the two sides sign a peace agreement. Darfur rebel groups reject the current boundaries, which divide the region into three states. If voters approve the referendum, a single Darfur region comprised of the three existing states will be created. The election was originally scheduled for July 1 and 2.
