Portugal election outs ruling Socialists

June 5, 2011, midnight

Portugal's center-right Social Democrats (PSD) defeated the governing Socialist Party of Prime Minister Jose SOCRATES on Sunday. The PSD’s 39 percent of the vote was enough to win 105 seats, while their likely coalition partner, the CDS party, captured 24 seats. The Socialists, whose popularity was damaged from introducing unpopular austerity measures, were reduced to 73 seats, down from 97 in the last election.
