Vietnam votes in one-party elections

May 22, 2011, midnight

Vietnam voted Sunday in elections for the 500 members of the country's National Assembly. Although the Communist Party is still the only legally permitted organization, Vietnam's government allows ten percent of legislators to be non-party members. All candidates, including non-party members, must be screened before they are allowed on the ballot. More than 60 million people were eligible to vote for 827 candidates.
