Opposition leaders are calling on voters to boycott legislative elections in Niger on October 20. They view the elections as illegitimate because they are authorized by a constitution passed at referendum against the wills of Parliament and the Constitutional Court. President Mamadou TANDJA dismissed both bodies earlier this year when each contended on different occasions that the August 4 referendum was unconstitutional. Among other provisions, the new constitution permits TANDJA to seek office indefinitely. Niger will hold a first-round Presidential election in November.
