Guinea's interim government will hold Presidential elections on January 31 and legislative elections on March 16, 2010, according to an announcement this week. Junta leader Moussa Dadis CAMARA seized power on December 23, 2008, hours after the death of President Lansana CONTE, who had ruled the country for 24 years. Known as the National Council for the Defense of Democracy, the junta in May had promised legislative and Presidential elections on October 11 and December 13, 2009, respectively. CONTE had said he would not contest the December election.
