Pierre Nkurunziza, the leader of the National Council for the Defense
of Democracy - Front for the Defense of Democracy, was elected president on
August 19. He was elected in a 151 to 9 vote by the members of the National
Assembly and the Senate. The new Constitution of Burundi provides for
parliamentary vote on the president in the post-transition period; in future
elections, the president will be elected by direct popular vote.
