Demetris CHRISTOFIAS of the Progressive Party of the Working People took office today as the newly elected president of Cyprus. CHRISTOFIAS defeated rival Ioannis KASOULIDES of the Democratic Rally in Sunday’s runoff election with 53.4 percent of the vote to KASOULIDES’ 46.6 percent. CHRISTOFIAS became only the sixth president of Cyprus and the first communist leader of the country. His victory revives the reunification efforts between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot community. On April 24, Greek Cypriots cast ballots in a referendum to decide whether Cyprus and Northern Cyprus should merge into one federation in time for the country’s formal entry into the European Union. According to the final results, 75.83% of Greek Cypriots voted against unification and 24.17% voted in favor. According to the United Nations plan that prompted the referendum, voters in both territories are required to approve the referendum in order for unification to take place. On February 16, voters in the Greek Cypriot community were called to the polls to elect a new president. Based on the final results, about 431,690 out of Cyprus's 476,758 Greek registered voters participated in the election. With only 160,724 or 38.80% of the votes, incumbent president Glafcos CLERIDES conceded defeat to Tassos PAPADOPOULOS, who in turn secured 213,353 or 51.51% of the valid votes. CLERIDES intended to rerun for a limited term as president to ensure that UN negotiations would continue toward reunifying the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. PAPADOPOULOS has promised to continue the UN-brokered talks and seal the reunification process prior to Cyprus's admission into the EU.
