Assembly: Chechnya (part of the Russian Federation) has a bicameral Parliament consisting of the Council of the Republic with 18 seats and the People's Assembly with 40 seats.
Description of electoral system:
The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a 5-year term.*
In the Council of the Republic 21 members are elected in single-member constituencies to serve 4-year terms. In the People's Assembly 40 members are elected by direct vote to serve 4-year terms.**
* In addition to needing more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a second round, article 71 of the Constitution stipulates that "The elections of the President are not considered valid if less than 50 percent of electors have participated."
** Deputies of United Russia have nine seats in the Council of the Republic and 24 in the People's Assembly.
